In this exclusive interview, Buyofuel’ CEO, Mr. Kishan Karunakaran, provides us with his insights into the original vision behind Buyofuel and how it has evolved over time.
Can you tell us more about the founding vision behind Buyofuel and how it has evolved since its inception?
I’ve been in the biofuel industry for several years. Since aggregating feedstocks for manufacturers was a significant barrier, my own experience as a biofuel producer inspired me to launch Buyofuel as a tech-enabled platform. In 2008, I established a biodiesel manufacturing unit where we commercialized one of the earliest 2nd generation biodiesel production technologies in the world based on specific organic wastes. For about a year, from 2010 to 2011, I used to go to several hotels, restaurants, etc. to spread awareness and collect UCO for my plant. Despite all these efforts, I was not able to generate any meaningful quantity of UCOs even with abundant availability. To facilitate business for manufacturers, the concept of streamlining the aggregation of wastes and developing a biofuel ecosystem through technology stuck in my mind. Through our innovative B2B online platform, we’re spearheading the digitization of biofuels. Buyofuel has transformed the entire biofuel supply chain, setting new standards in the energy sector. Our impact has been substantial, significantly reducing carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuels and diverting waste to the energy sector. In just four years of operation, Buyofuel currently has a sales transaction volume of 1,24,092.98 MT per month, demonstrating our strong commitment to the field.
What unique value proposition does Buyofuel offer to its stakeholders, particularly in terms of facilitating transactions in the biofuel industry?
The biofuel industry faces challenges in sourcing raw materials due to a lack of an organized supply chain. This results in difficulties for both biofuel manufacturers and fuel consumers. Sourcing biofuels or wastes is complex and opaque, hindering the industry’s growth. No organized supply chain for biofuels and wastes, making it hard for manufacturers to source and consumers to switch. Buyofuel establishes a structured online marketplace, connecting waste generators, biofuel manufacturers, and fuel consumers seamlessly. The platform ensures a transparent process from product enquiry to doorstep delivery, reducing opacity in transactions. Biofuel manufacturers access a broad range of organic wastes, fostering stability in raw material supply. We aim to create an ecosystem where every stakeholder can build connections within the biofuel community. Also, we provide transparency and quality assurance via technology so that biofuel stakeholders can do business with ease.

Buyofuel operates on a transaction-based business model. The platform connects buyers and sellers in the biofuels and organic wastes sector, facilitating B2B transactions. Revenue is generated through trading margins on transactions conducted on the platform. Both biofuel manufacturers and fuel-consuming businesses, acting as users in the marketplace, contribute to these trading margins. Buyofuel aims to provide a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven solution to streamline the sourcing and trading of biofuels and organic wastes, creating value for all stakeholders involved in the supply chain.
How does Buyofuel ensure the verification and authenticity of buyers and sellers on its platform to maintain trust and reliability?

His MBA from the National University of Singapore provides strategic insights crucial for steering Buyofuel’s growth.Buyofuel tackles a pressing environmental challenge within India’s energy landscape. The nation’s annual consumption of over 1300 Million MT of fossil fuels results in more than 3200 Million MT of CO2 equivalent emissions. Simultaneously, the burning of over 40 Million MT of organic waste exacerbates pollution and waste issues. With India heavily reliant on importing 83% of its fuel consumption, there needs to be more energy security. The crux of the issue lies in the need for an organized supply chain for sourcing biofuels and waste materials. This unstructured landscape poses hurdles for biofuel manufacturers and hinders fuel consumers’ seamless transition to eco-friendly alternatives. Buyofuel aims to bridge this gap by establishing an efficient marketplace and facilitating the sourcing of biofuels and waste materials. Through these efforts, we contribute to reducing fossil fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions, and curbing organic waste burning.
