Mark Zuckerberg, a co-founder of Meta, recently shared his opinions on Apple’s Vision Pro headset during a company-wide conference. He compared it with Meta’s virtual reality Quest headgear, emphasizing how inexpensive and socially inclusive they are. Zuckerberg criticized Apple’s advertising ads because they showed people living in isolation, a future he does not support. Now the clash between Apple’s Vision Pro vs Meta’s Quest.

Trade-offs in Design

Zuckerberg talked about the technology behind the Vision Pro headset throughout the conference. He pointed out that Apple has made certain compromises to get a metal design rather than the typical plastic construction of competing VR/AR headsets. The absence of an integrated battery was also mentioned as a weight-saving strategy. Zuckerberg says Apple’s design choices led to higher resolution, power usage, and a sevenfold price increase. Additionally, a cable connection to an external battery is now required for the Vision Pro headset. Zuckerberg admitted that although these trade-offs in design would work for Apple’s intended audience, Meta had previously investigated related limitations and discovered alternate solutions.

Divergent Visions

Despite being upbeat about the metaverse concept, Zuckerberg emphasized the fundamental differences between Apple and Meta. Creating a virtual environment where users can customize their avatars is the goal of Meta, whereas Apple wants to offer augmented reality experiences by placing digital material over actual items. Additionally, the Vision Pro headset, at least in its first-generation version, is more focused on content consumption and productivity, whereas Meta’s Quest headphones primarily serve the gaming community.

Apple’s Perspective

Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized the Vision Pro headset’s capabilities in an interview, stating it surpasses an iPhone and Mac by performing additional functions. Cook acknowledged that the global economy would impact the average consumer’s ability to buy the Vision Pro headset next year. He said that such cutting-edge technology comes at a premium price by pointing to the presence of top-of-the-line screens and a powerful M2 SoC to power the gadget.

Conclusion

He lauded Meta’s Quest headsets for their accessibility and capacity to encourage user interaction. Zuckerberg highlighted the different perspectives of Meta and Apple while expressing hope about Apple’s entry into the AR/VR field. Ultimately, Apple wants to offer augmented reality experiences, whereas Metaverse symbolizes a virtual universe. It will be interesting to watch how both Apple’s Vision Pro vs Meta’s Quest businesses influence the direction of AR/VR technology as the industry develops.
