Can MSMEs Afford to Ignore Industry 4.0? Making Advanced Manufacturing Accessible to Smaller Businesses

For a small manufacturing business, a few extra minutes on every order can quickly add up to hours of lost productivity. A missed inventory update, a production error or a machine waiting for manual intervention may seem like small operational issues, but together they can affect costs, turnaround times and customer commitments. As Indian manufacturers look to become more efficient and competitive, technology is increasingly becoming a practical business tool rather than a futuristic concept.

This is particularly relevant for India’s millions of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Industry 4.0 is often associated with artificial intelligence, robotics, connected machines and highly automated production lines. While these technologies have an important role to play, the Industry 4.0 journey for an MSME does not have to begin with a complete transformation of its factory. It can begin with identifying where technology can make an existing process faster, more accurate or easier to manage.

Beyond the smart factory

One of the biggest misconceptions about Industry 4.0 is that businesses need to transform their entire operations at once. For MSMEs, a more practical approach is to identify specific areas where technology can deliver measurable improvements. This could mean digitising inventory, automating repetitive administrative tasks, improving production tracking, or creating more efficient systems for printing, labelling and documentation. Individually, these may appear to be small interventions, but collectively they can improve visibility across the business and reduce avoidable errors and delays. This incremental approach is particularly important for MSMEs, which often operate with limited technology budgets, lean teams and fewer dedicated IT resources. Any investment therefore needs to demonstrate clear business value and fit into existing workflows without creating unnecessary disruption.

The most effective technology is not necessarily the most sophisticated; it is technology that addresses a genuine business requirement and delivers value in day-to-day operations. Even familiar workplace technologies such as printing, scanning and labelling can contribute to this transformation. When integrated into organised digital workflows, these tools can support better information management, documentation and traceability. Digital transformation does not always have to begin with artificial intelligence or robotics. For many MSMEs, it can start by making an existing process more connected, reliable and efficient.

When efficiency becomes competitiveness

The need for such improvements is becoming more important as Indian MSMEs compete in markets where customers increasingly expect consistent quality, faster turnaround and greater flexibility. For a manufacturer managing multiple orders, relying on information spread across spreadsheets, paper records and individual conversations can make it difficult to maintain complete visibility. As operations grow, these gaps can lead to delays, duplication and errors. A more connected workflow can help bring greater clarity to production and inventory processes, while accurate labelling and documentation become increasingly important when products and shipments move through multiple stages or across different locations.

The objective of technology adoption should not be to replace people, but to enable them to work more effectively. By reducing the time spent on repetitive tasks, digital tools can allow employees to focus more on activities that require judgement, problem-solving and decision-making. As automation becomes more accessible to smaller businesses, the competitive advantage will come not simply from having more technology, but from using it effectively alongside people and existing processes

Making technology accessible to MSMEs

For MSMEs, accessibility goes beyond the initial cost of a technology solution. Technology also needs to be easy to understand, simple to implement and capable of scaling as the business grows. A smaller manufacturer should be able to address one operational challenge today and build on that foundation over time. This allows businesses to understand the value of technology before making larger investments, while also giving employees time to adapt to new ways of working. Technology providers have an important role to play in this process, with solutions needing to reflect the realities of smaller businesses, including limited IT resources, different levels of digital maturity and the need for minimal disruption.

The human element is equally important. A new system delivers value only when employees understand how to use it and see how it can make their work easier. Building digital confidence within an organisation is therefore as important as introducing the technology itself. For MSMEs, combining practical technology with effective implementation and employee readiness will be critical to making digital transformation sustainable and ensuring that technology delivers meaningful value over the long term.

Building the next phase of manufacturing

India’s manufacturing ambitions will depend not only on the capabilities of its largest factories, but also on how effectively its MSMEs can improve productivity, quality and competitiveness. For smaller businesses, Industry 4.0 should therefore be approached as a journey rather than a single technology investment. The starting point could be a repetitive process, an information gap or an area where manual intervention is creating unnecessary delays. Once that problem is identified, businesses can introduce the right technology, measure its impact and build from there. Over time, these individual improvements can create a more connected, responsive and efficient operation. 

This is where Industry 4.0 can have its greatest relevance for MSMEs. The goal is not to make every factory look futuristic. It is to help businesses operate with greater efficiency, visibility and consistency, while giving them the flexibility to respond to changing customer and market requirements.

For India’s MSMEs, the next phase of manufacturing may therefore not be defined by how much technology they adopt, but by how effectively they use it to solve real business problems. Making that technology accessible and practical will be key to ensuring that the benefits of Industry 4.0 extend beyond large enterprises and become part of India’s broader manufacturing growth story.
