How corporates are evolving policies to support new-age parenting

new age parenting

In today’s rapidly changing social and professional landscape, parenting is no longer defined by traditional roles and responsibilities. With dual-income households, evolving gender norms, and increased awareness around mental health and work-life balance, the needs of modern parents have transformed significantly. In response, forward-thinking corporations are reimagining their workplace policies to support what is often called “new-age parenting.” From extended parental leaves and gender-neutral childcare support to flexible work arrangements and mental wellness initiatives, companies are actively reshaping their HR strategies to create more inclusive, empathetic, and family-friendly work environments. This shift not only empowers employees to thrive both at home and at work but also reflects a growing recognition that the success of a business is deeply intertwined with the well-being of its people.

Mr. Sudhir Mateti, CHRO of Arya Omnitalk and Syntel by Arvind said In today’s fast-changing social and professional landscape, the definition of parenting has expanded far beyond the traditional Mold & practices.

With growing existence of diverse family structures &  in the process of being socially acceptable & recognised , dual-career households, and the mental health challenges of modern parenthood, forward-thinking corporations are required to reimagine workplace policies.

These changes aren’t just about ticking the box on inclusivity and diversity rather they’re about creating a culture that genuinely supports employees through one of life’s most roller coaster & transformative journeys with respect to social stigmas & acceptance: parenting.

1) Extending maternity leave beyond compliance

2) Providing extended care and support while being connected

3) Prioritizing Mental Health and Well-being

4) Redefining Parental Leave

5) Displaying flexibility Post maternity leave ( wrt Baby care etc)

6) Recognizing the logistical challenges of raising children

7) Supporting All Types of Families – (LGBTQ, Single Parents, Parents going through divorces, Surrogative parents, IVF parents, adopted Parents etc….)

8) Investing for 2nd innings – Encouraging sabbatical leaves & re-joining

Conclusion

As the concept of family evolves, so too must the workplace. Corporates will have to embrace these changes & support the well-being of their employees—they’re also working towards cultivating a more inclusive, empathetic, and future-ready organization. In a competitive talent landscape, such progressive policies are more than just HR trends; they’re essential for building a resilient and engaged workforce.

Mr. Asif Upadhye, Director, Never Grow Up highlights, being a parent myself, can confidently say that parenting never comes with neat edges, but thankfully, neither do today’s best workplaces. Parenting support at work no longer means a crèche membership and a congratulations card because modern Indian workplaces realise that parents navigate through sleep deprivation, school WhatsApp groups, and surprise allergies, all before logging in.

Several leading companies have upgraded their paternity policies. They’ve extended paternity leave, made policies gender-neutral, and allowed flexible work hours & phased returns to work. While there is still some way to go in the area of parental leaves, the true shift is in the way people look at parenting.

Parents no longer feel the need to apologise for being humans. With leaders sharing their own parenting chaos in meetings & one colleague backing another for stepping out for a school duty, the new inclusive culture is sending out a powerful message of “we’ve got your back.”

Do believe that companies must upgrade their paternity policies too, because real inclusion means fostering a workplace that makes room for real life, baby, bottle and all.

Ms. Poonam Jhaveri Gandhi, Founder & CEO, Stone Bridge Solution said as parenting roles evolve, so do workplace policies and it’s a welcome change. Flexibility is no longer a perk, but a necessity.

Today, many companies offer 1–2 WFH days a month, making it easier for parents to manage PTAs, doctor visits, or school events without guilt.

There’s also a shift toward flexible hours—where completing your weekly targets matters more than clocking in at 9. It’s empowering, especially for working parents juggling deadlines and dinnertimes.

Some organisations are going a step further with childcare tie-ups or crèche partnerships, helping new mothers transition back to work. In Maharashtra, factories are now mandated to provide crèche facilities—a small but significant win.

As a mother of two, I see this progress firsthand. Ten years ago, when I had my first child, starting my recruitment firm was more out of necessity than choice.

Parenting doesn’t pause for work—thankfully, work is finally learning to adapt.
