Sports Infrastructure

Authored article by Mr. Nasir Ali, Founder & CEO, Gallant Sports and Infrastructure

Sports infrastructure in Indian schools, universities, and colleges remains severely underdeveloped, hampering students’ physical, mental, and emotional growth. Despite India’s aspirations to excel globally in sports, the foundation for nurturing talent is lacking. Most institutions treat sports as a secondary activity, investing minimally in grounds, equipment, and training. A 2019 report by KPMG highlighted that less than 40% of Indian schools have proper sports facilities, emphasizing the urgent need for reform.

This neglect is alarming, considering the long-term benefits of sports. Studies show that students involved in sports perform better academically, exhibit stronger leadership skills, and have improved physical and mental health. For instance, research from the University of Illinois revealed that students participating in regular physical activity were 20% more likely to achieve higher grades. Furthermore, sports help foster essential life skills such as teamwork, time management, and resilience. Institutions with robust sports facilities also see higher student satisfaction, improved enrolment rates, and stronger alumni engagement, further underscoring the importance of this investment.

Globally, universities and colleges prioritize sports, recognizing their role in shaping well-rounded individuals. Countries like the United States and Australia exemplify this, with universities allocating significant budgets to sports infrastructure. In the U.S., collegiate sports programs act as a feeder system for professional leagues, and facilities like stadiums, training centres, and advanced equipment are integral to their success. Stanford University, for example, stands as a beacon of sports excellence. It has won 39 Olympic medals in Paris 2024 and is preparing extensively for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Such achievements underline the role of advanced infrastructure and institutional commitment in producing world-class athletes. In contrast, Indian institutions often lack even basic amenities such as level playing fields, let alone access to professional coaching or modern equipment.

The lack of investment in sports infrastructure in India also impacts societal development. Sports have the power to unite communities, instil a sense of pride, and inspire the younger generation. By failing to provide adequate facilities, universities and colleges miss the opportunity to cultivate this culture. Moreover, inadequate infrastructure limits India’s potential to produce world-class athletes. Without access to quality training grounds, budding talents are left to fend for themselves or seek opportunities abroad, further widening the gap between India and leading sporting nations.

The government’s “Khelo India” initiative is a step in the right direction, aiming to make sports accessible and promote athletic excellence. However, its success depends on active participation from educational institutions. Universities and colleges must view sports as an investment, not an expense. Developing proper grounds, hiring professional coaches, and equipping campuses with modern facilities can transform them into talent hubs. This approach not only enhances student outcomes but also boosts the institution’s reputation, making it a win-win proposition.

To bridge the gap, institutions can explore innovative funding models. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) offer a viable solution, allowing universities and colleges to collaborate with corporate sponsors and sports organizations. Additionally, leveraging Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds can help finance the construction of state-of-the-art facilities. Successful examples include partnerships between private schools and sports academies, which have resulted in the development of facilities like swimming pools, synthetic tracks, and multi-sport arenas.

Another avenue is integrating sports education into the curriculum, making it a mandatory component of the academic framework. Countries like Finland have demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, where physical activity is an essential part of daily school routines. By embedding sports into the curriculum, Indian universities and colleges can foster a holistic learning environment that prioritizes both physical fitness and intellectual growth.

Developing sports infrastructure also creates job opportunities in areas such as coaching, event management, and facility maintenance. This can contribute to the local economy while promoting health awareness among communities. Furthermore, the presence of quality sports facilities attracts regional and national tournaments, boosting tourism and generating additional revenue streams for institutions.

The private sector has a crucial role to play in this transformation. Companies like Reliance and Tata have already invested in sports development through initiatives such as the Indian Super League and grassroots programs. Educational institutions can partner with such organizations to enhance their facilities and training programs. For instance, Reliance Foundation’s Youth Sports initiative provides grants to schools, colleges, and universities, enabling them to upgrade their sports infrastructure and participate in competitive leagues.

In addition to physical infrastructure, technology can revolutionize sports education. Smart systems for performance tracking, virtual coaching platforms, and AI-driven analytics can help institutions optimize training programs and identify promising talent. Integrating such technologies ensures that Indian universities and colleges stay ahead of the curve and provide students with a competitive edge.

Finally, institutions must adopt a long-term vision for sports development. This includes setting measurable goals, such as increasing student participation in sports by 50% within five years or producing a certain number of state-level athletes annually. Transparent reporting and accountability mechanisms can help track progress and ensure sustained efforts.

The time to act is now. By investing in sports infrastructure, Indian universities and colleges can nurture future athletes and instil a culture of excellence, teamwork, and resilience—values essential for nation-building. Sports are not merely an extracurricular activity; they are a cornerstone of personal and societal growth. Without grounds, there’s no glory, and the future of Indian sports depends on the choices we make today.
